Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s Longest-Serving Monarch, Has Passed Away At The Age Of 96.
During the past few months, the
Queen has appeared to be frailer and has been withdrawing from public
engagements. As a result, she has taken to walking with a stick and has been
seen visiting the Chelsea Flower Show in a special motorised buggy.
The Royal Family announced
Thursday that Queen
Elizabeth II died in Scotland at the age of 96 after battling
health issues since October last year.
As reported by the Royal Family,
“The Queen passed away peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral. The King and The
Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and return to London
tomorrow.”
The Queen’s grandson and his
wife, Harry and Meghan Markle – who had a public showdown with the Palace, flew
in from Canada to be at her bedside as doctors grew concerned about her health.
After being told to rest on
Wednesday, the Queen pulled out of a meeting with her political advisors,
according to the news agency AFP. Her outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and
his successor, Liz Truss, had audiences at Balmoral the previous day.
As the Queen has grown frailer,
she has reduced her public engagements and has begun walking with a stick, as
well as using a motorised buggy to tour the Chelsea Flower Show.
As part of the 70th anniversary
celebrations of the Queen’s accession to the British throne, the UK celebrated
the Platinum Jubilee, which took place in June. Her husband, Prince Phillip,
died two months before his 100th birthday last year at the age of 99.
